Fancy a laugh? Here's the BBC's list of 'Who is your club's most notorious hardman?'

Some good choices, but fuck knows who some of the people they got to do this are. Apparently Andy Robertson is Liverpool's hardest player ever. and Roy Keane is the toughest player ever to play in the Premier League....
Some of this lot don't seem to know football stretches back more than 20 years.

Do you know where dicks grew up? (I don’t). I think Swindon is onto something, I’m pretty sure he said that being a kid amongst the Birmingham hard men are what shaped his persona in the pitch. Fwiw I knew someone who was taught by Julian’s mum, said she was a lovely gentle woman so it doesn’t sound like he had a rough upbringing based on that very limited info

I'll give the Harford episode a listen over the weekend.

Mick Hartford tells a story about Tony Coton on that YouTube podcast called “under the cosh”

They were good pals and when Harford was at Luton & Coton was at Watford they would often meet at a pub and on one occasion there was an altercation between them and some locals involving weapons. Well worth a listen/watch.

That Brum side of the mid eighties also featured Tony Coton who was involved in many a nightclub / taxi rank altercation as I later bore witness to on a night out in Watford.

Mick Harford was one hard bastard and his partner in crime once he moved on to Luton the headbanded Steve Foster one dirty one.
I still remember that League cup semi at Upton park in the late 80s where Mcknightmare gifted them an unasailable lead.

Another player who had a liking for the headband Eric Young got
pelters (quite literally with coins) from the north bank in that other famous League cup match when Martin Allen scored a screamer which didn't really belong in that game which was X rated to say the least.
I also recall Devo playing in that match and skipping away from numerous challenges designed to cut him In half in a vintage display.

The unfortunate thing about Julians hard man reputation ( fully deserved by the way) was it kind of masked what an actual good player he was .

On the pitch and off the pitch are so distinctly different. Keane was a tough competitor but its been said many times that like most tinkers, he ain't all that in person. Ask Jon Walters.

Duncan Ferguson was unmatchable on the pitch and also very tasty off it as those blokes who burgled his house found it LOL.

Dicks is ours for sure. In all eras he would have been ours.

Swindon, I reckon Dicks would have had all that ingrained in him, from the neck of the woods he grew up in Bristol, way before playing with that Birmingham City lot.

No doubt Keane was an extremely tremendous tough competitor and dirty cunt, but I've seen him shit himself numerous times when someone has faced him up and one of them was shearer!

The only player I ever saw Bonzo slightly shy away from was Billy Whitehurst.

Whitehurst was a complete nutter who used to fight gipsies in bare knuckle boxing on his days off.

There are a few videos on YouTube where ex team mates of his tell very funny anecdotes about their time with him.

I suspect Alvin was a bit of a tough guy on the pitch and Mark Ward was a fearless terrier. Certainly one of the bravest I saw was Patsy Holland, he wouldn't hesitate to put his foot or head in.
